Vintage wide-angle prime lens for Pentax M42 screw mount cameras.
The Asahi Pentax Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 28mm f/3.5 is a wide-angle prime in the SMC Takumar series — the highest-quality coating generation applied to Asahi Pentax's M42 lens line. 'Super-Multi-Coated' (SMC) indicates the multicoating that reduced flare and improved contrast over the earlier single-coated Super-Takumar. Released in the late 1960s–early 1970s.
28mm focal length, f/3.5 maximum aperture, Super-Multi-Coated (SMC), M42 screw mount, manual focus, full-frame coverage, aperture ring with Auto/Manual switch.
The SMC Takumar 28mm f/3.5 is among the most valued vintage M42 wide-angle primes — SMC multicoating delivers excellent contrast and flare resistance for its era. Via M42 adapter, it works on virtually any modern mirrorless system. Wide-angle performance is excellent at f/5.6 and smaller; at f/3.5 it shows characteristic vintage softening in corners. Compare: the Super-Takumar 28mm f/3.5 (earlier, single-coated version) for the pre-SMC equivalent.
Check the Auto/Manual aperture switch (Auto = spring-loaded open-aperture, Manual = stopped down for operation). Test focus helicoid smoothness throughout the range. Inspect SMC coating — distinctive in colour under light; verify it is the SMC version not Super-Takumar. Check aperture blades for oil. Verify M42 thread engagement condition.
