Atomos's external recorder/monitor for professional video production.
The Atomos Ninja Ultra is a 5.2-inch monitor-recorder for professional video production, providing both a calibrated field monitor and a recording device in a single unit. It accepts RAW or high-bitrate video output via HDMI 2.0 from compatible cameras — including ProRes RAW from Sony, Canon, and Nikon mirrorless bodies — and records to removable SSD media. SDI input is not native; it requires the optional Atomos CONNECT accessory.
The 5.2-inch IPS display provides 1920×1080 resolution at 1000 nits for outdoor monitoring. Recording formats include Apple ProRes RAW, ProRes HQ/422/LT, Avid DNxHR/DNxHD, and H.265, all in MOV wrapper. Maximum recording specification is up to 8K/30fps ProRes RAW via HDMI 2.0 from compatible cameras; 4K/60fps and 1080p/120fps are also supported. Input is HDMI 2.0 only — SDI requires the optional Atomos CONNECT accessory for 12G-SDI, Wi-Fi 6, and GigE. Body weight 360g without battery or recording media.
The Ninja Ultra's practical role is unlocking RAW or high-bitrate recording from cameras that output RAW via HDMI but cannot record it internally: the Sony A7S III, Canon EOS R5/R6, and Nikon Z series all output RAW over HDMI that the Ninja Ultra records to SSD. The 1000-nit 5.2-inch display provides a significantly larger monitoring surface than any camera LCD for focus and exposure confirmation. The HDMI-only input is the primary limitation for broadcast and cinema production environments that use SDI infrastructure.
On the used market the Ninja Ultra is available at professional monitor-recorder pricing. Condition checks: display for any uniformity issues or stuck pixels, HDMI port contacts, SSD slot operation, and battery compatibility. The Atomos CONNECT accessory should be present if SDI capability is needed. Compatible with any camera outputting ProRes RAW, RAW, or high-bitrate HDMI video; specific RAW formats require camera-specific firmware support.
