Blackmagic's affordable cinema camera with MFT mount, 4K RAW, and DaVinci Resolve included.
The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K launched in 2018 and democratised cinema-quality video by delivering 4K RAW recording at a price point previously unthinkable. With a Micro Four Thirds sensor, 13 stops of dynamic range, and DaVinci Resolve Studio included, it put genuine cinema tools in the hands of independent filmmakers.
Key features include 4K DCI and UHD recording in RAW, ProRes, and H.265, dual native ISO at 400 and 3200 for clean low-light footage, a 5-inch touchscreen for monitoring and control, and a USB-C expansion port. The MFT mount accepts native lenses plus adapted Canon EF, Nikon F, and PL mount glass via readily available adapters.
The BMPCC 4K is praised for image quality that rivals cameras costing ten times more and for including DaVinci Resolve Studio. It is criticised for atrocious battery life requiring external power, no meaningful autofocus, and the MFT sensor crop which makes wide-angle shots challenging.
Good value used. Check the USB-C port condition, sensor for hot pixels, and the touchscreen. Budget for a cage, external battery solution, and SSD storage. The camera is a tool for filmmakers, not a general-purpose camera. With the right accessories it produces genuinely cinematic footage.
