Canon's original macro prime — the EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro with true 1:1 magnification.
The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro (non-L) is a macro prime from Canon for the EF system, providing 1:1 life-size reproduction at 100mm focal length. It predates the EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM and lacks the L designation, IS stabilisation, and USM autofocus of the later model.
The lens delivers 100mm at f/2.8 maximum aperture with 1:1 macro magnification, internal focusing, an arc-form drive autofocus motor, and full-frame coverage. It accepts Canon EF mount and standard filters. The non-L version uses an older AF motor that is slower than USM.
The non-L 100mm f/2.8 Macro delivers equivalent optical performance to the later L version in terms of sharpness and reproduction quality — the L upgrade primarily added IS, USM AF, and the L-grade construction. For static macro subjects where AF speed is less critical, the optical quality is essentially identical. It is a highly regarded macro lens available at a fraction of the L price.
Test autofocus operation at macro distances — the arc-form drive motor is slower than USM but should be smooth and accurate. Check 1:1 magnification accuracy. Inspect the front element for coating damage from close-range use. Test image sharpness at 1:1 on a flat test target to verify optical alignment.
