Canon's L-series macro with revolutionary Hybrid IS — the first stabilisation system designed specifically for macro work.
The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM was released in 2009 as the L-series upgrade to the non-L EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM, adding Hybrid IS — Canon's first IS system to compensate both angular shake and shift (linear) camera movement simultaneously — and L-series dust and moisture sealing. 1:1 magnification is provided at the 0.3m minimum focus distance. At 625g and 67mm filter thread it is the professional Canon EF macro standard.
The optical design uses 15 elements in 12 groups. Nine aperture blades produce smooth bokeh. The 67mm filter thread is standard for L-series mid-aperture primes. At 625g the lens is moderate. Minimum focus distance of 0.3m at 1:1 (life-size) magnification. Hybrid IS provides approximately 4 stops of compensation, correcting both angular and shift-type camera movement. Ring USM provides fast, quiet AF with full-time manual override. f/2.8 maximum aperture. L-series dust and moisture sealing.
The Hybrid IS dual-axis stabilisation is the defining advancement at macro distances: at 1:1 magnification, minor camera movement is amplified by the close focus, and linear (shift) movement dominates over angular shake — conventional IS systems only compensate angular shake, leaving shift movement uncorrected. Hybrid IS addresses both, making handheld 1:1 macro photography significantly more practical. For portrait work at 100mm, the L-series sealing and ring USM provide professional reliability.
On the used market the EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM is available at L-series macro prime pricing, well below its launch cost. Condition checks: Hybrid IS operation at macro distances, ring USM AF response, L-series sealing, and 67mm front element for marks. The Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM provides enhanced IS for RF bodies. Compatible with all Canon EOS DSLR and R bodies via EF-RF adapter.
