Canon's affordable L-series ultra-wide zoom, a landscape favourite for nearly two decades.
The Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM was released in 2003 as an L-series ultra-wide zoom for Canon full-frame EOS bodies, offering a more affordable entry into L-series wide-angle photography than the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L. The constant f/4 aperture, ring-type USM motor, and L-series weather sealing positioned it as the standard ultra-wide choice for landscape, architectural, and travel photographers in the EF ecosystem. On APS-C bodies the 27-64mm equivalent limits its ultra-wide character significantly.
The optical design uses 12 elements in 9 groups, including three aspherical elements and three UD elements. The 77mm filter thread is the L-series standard, compatible with most established Canon professional filter collections. At approximately 500g the lens is moderate in weight for an ultra-wide zoom. Minimum focus distance of 0.28m enables close foreground subject framing with full wide-angle background context. Seven rounded aperture blades produce smooth out-of-focus rendering. The ring-type USM motor is fast and silent with full-time manual focus override. L-series dust and moisture resistance is built in.
For landscape, architectural, and travel photography on full-frame bodies the 17-40mm provides useful wide-angle coverage from the dramatic 17mm perspective to the more restrained 40mm. The constant f/4 aperture is consistent and adequate for most landscape and architectural use where depth of field rather than aperture speed is the priority. The 0.28m minimum focus enables close foreground elements to fill the frame while retaining environmental context — a technique associated with landscape composition. On APS-C bodies the useful range starts at 27mm equivalent, limiting ultra-wide character.
On the used market the 17-40mm f/4L USM is widely available at accessible prices for an L-series lens. The Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM (2014) adds IS at a higher price; the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II offers a faster aperture. For full-frame photographers who primarily use a tripod for ultra-wide work, the 17-40mm at its price point represents strong value. Condition checks: ring USM response, L-series sealing at the zoom barrel, and front element for cleaning marks. Compatible with all Canon EOS DSLRs and via EF-RF adapter on EOS R bodies.
