Canon's original L-series 24-70mm professional zoom, a workhorse without IS.
The Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM was launched in 2002 as Canon's first-generation professional standard zoom at f/2.8. Replacing the older EF 28-70mm f/2.8L, it extended the wide end to 24mm and became a staple for professional photographers worldwide for over a decade.
Optical quality is very good with strong centre sharpness and the characteristic warm L-series rendering. There is no image stabilisation which is the main disadvantage compared to later designs. Ring USM autofocus is fast and reliable. Build is professional-grade L-series with weather sealing and a metal barrel. The lens is large and heavy.
Canon EF mount only, 77mm filter thread. The Mark II version launched in 2012 with dramatically improved optics, particularly in the corners, and remains current. The RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM adds IS for the mirrorless system.
Available cheaply used as the Mark II has replaced it in professional kits. Check the zoom ring mechanism which can develop stiffness, USM motor, and weather seals. The lack of IS is noticeable versus modern alternatives. Still optically capable but the Mark II is worth the premium for serious professional use.
