Canon's compact L-series standard zoom with macro capability, trading aperture for features.
The Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM launched in 2012 as a compact alternative to the heavier 24-70mm f/2.8L. By accepting a one-stop slower aperture, Canon added image stabilisation, macro capability at 0.7x magnification, and significantly reduced the size and weight. It offered a different set of trade-offs for photographers who valued versatility over speed.
Optical quality is good with sharp centre performance and acceptable corners. IS provides approximately 5 stops of stabilisation which partially compensates for the slower f/4 aperture. The 0.7x macro mode at 70mm is genuinely useful for close-up work. Build is L-series with weather sealing. Ring USM provides fast silent AF.
Canon EF mount only, 77mm filter thread. This competes with the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM which offers more range but no macro. The EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II offers a wider aperture but no IS. The Canon RF system offers the RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM with both speed and IS.
Moderate value used. Check IS operation, macro focusing mode, and the zoom ring. The lens offers a unique combination of L-series quality, IS, and macro capability. For RF-mount users the EF 24-70mm f/4L IS can be adapted but there are better native options.
