Canon's original L-series 24mm f/1.4 — the first-gen fast wide prime for EF mount.
The Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L USM launched in 1997 as Canon's first f/1.4 wide-angle prime with L-series designation. It provided fast wide-angle capability for photojournalists and event photographers on the Canon EOS system.
Optically good for its era — sharp from f/2 with characterful rendering at f/1.4. The L-series build with weather sealing and ring USM motor was premium. Some corner softness on full-frame that the Mark II (2008) significantly improved.
Canon EF mount with 77mm filter thread. Approximately 550g. L-series weather-sealed construction. Ring USM — fast silent AF. Minimum focus distance 25cm. Full-frame coverage.
Available used at mid-range prices. The Mark II (2008) with aspherical elements is dramatically sharper — strongly preferred. The Sigma 24mm f/1.4 Art also outperforms the original. Only consider the Mark I at very low prices. Check for smooth AF and clear optics.
