Canon's original EF standard zoom — 28-105mm with USM autofocus, a common kit lens throughout the 1990s.
The Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 USM launched in 1992 as a versatile standard zoom covering wider than 35mm at the wide end. It was commonly bundled with Canon EOS film bodies throughout the 1990s and offered USM autofocus in a compact, affordable package.
Optical quality is adequate — sharp in the centre at mid-apertures but soft in corners, particularly at 28mm. The USM motor (micro-USM type) provides reasonably quiet autofocus. Macro mode at 105mm provides useful close-up capability with 0.5x magnification ratio.
Canon EF mount with 58mm filter thread. Weighs approximately 375g. No image stabilisation. Full-frame coverage. Minimum focus distance 50cm in standard mode, 28cm in macro mode. Plastic barrel with metal mount. Variable aperture f/3.5-4.5.
Very common and cheap used — a staple of the 1990s Canon kit. The macro mode is a nice bonus. The EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM is vastly superior in every way. Only worth considering as an ultra-budget standard zoom for Canon EF bodies. Check for zoom creep.
