Canon's budget full-frame standard zoom — 28-105mm with USM, the stripped-down version of the f/3.5-4.5.
The Canon EF 28-105mm f/4-5.6 USM is a budget standard zoom from the 1990s, covering 28-105mm on full-frame with micro-USM autofocus. Lighter and cheaper than the f/3.5-4.5 version, it served as a basic kit zoom for Canon film SLRs.
Optically basic — acceptable centre sharpness but soft at edges. The variable f/4-5.6 aperture is slow. Micro-USM provides quieter AF than non-USM but lacks the full-time manual focus of ring-type USM. Adequate for casual use.
Canon EF mount with 58mm filter thread. Approximately 210g — very lightweight. Full-frame coverage. No image stabilisation. Plastic construction. Minimum focus distance approximately 50cm.
Very cheap used — essentially free. Any modern kit zoom is vastly better. The 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 USM is better with faster aperture and macro mode. Only useful at throwaway prices. Check for smooth zoom mechanism.
