Canon's basic EF standard zoom — cheap 28-90mm commonly bundled with entry film bodies.
The Canon EF 28-90mm f/4-5.6 II is one of Canon's cheapest standard zooms ever made — commonly bundled with entry-level EOS film cameras throughout the late 1990s. The Mark II designation indicates minor cosmetic updates over the original version.
Optically very basic — acceptable centre sharpness at mid-apertures only with soft edges throughout the zoom range. Variable f/4-5.6 aperture is quite slow. No USM motor on this version — basic DC motor with audible operation. No image stabilisation.
Canon EF mount with 58mm filter thread and approximately 190g — very lightweight for any zoom lens. Full-frame coverage with entirely plastic construction including the lens mount. Minimum focus distance approximately 38cm. The most basic Canon EF zoom specification.
Essentially free used — often under five pounds. Any modern kit zoom dramatically outperforms it in every optical and mechanical respect. The plastic mount is fragile and can crack with repeated use. Only useful at throwaway prices or if already bundled with a camera purchase.
