Canon's fast wide-angle prime with USM, a classic for photojournalism and street photography.
The Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM was released in 1995 as a fast USM standard-wide prime for EF-mount bodies, providing a 28mm full-frame perspective — slightly wider than the 35mm standard-wide — with f/1.8 maximum aperture for subject separation and low-light capability. The ring-type USM motor provides fast, silent autofocus with full-time manual focus override. On APS-C bodies the 44mm equivalent provides a near-standard street and documentary perspective.
The optical design uses 10 elements in 9 groups, including one aspherical element. Seven rounded aperture blades produce smooth out-of-focus rendering at wider apertures. The 58mm filter thread is shared with several Canon EF consumer and prosumer primes. At 310g the lens is moderate for a fast prime. Minimum focus distance of 0.25m enables moderate close-up framing for the wide-standard perspective. Ring USM provides fast, silent AF with full-time manual focus override. There is no Image Stabiliser.
The 28mm perspective on full-frame provides a standard-wide field of view — modestly wider than the 35mm, used for environmental portraiture, street photography, and documentary work where a slightly wider context than 35mm is preferred. At f/1.8 the subject separation at 28mm is pronounced relative to standard-wide primes at f/2.8 or slower. For APS-C users the 44mm equivalent covers the standard street photography perspective. The ring USM motor makes the lens practical for video AF.
On the used market the EF 28mm f/1.8 USM is affordable and widely available. Condition checks: ring USM response across the focus range, front element for coating marks — a common concern on this generation of Canon primes — and aperture blades for oil contamination. The Canon RF 28mm f/2.8 STM is the native RF equivalent for EOS R users. Compatible with all Canon EOS DSLR and R bodies via EF-RF adapter.
