Canon's fast wide-angle prime with USM, a classic for photojournalism and street photography.
The Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM was launched in 1995 and remained in Canon's lineup for over two decades. Providing a wide 28mm perspective at a fast f/1.8, it served photojournalists and street photographers who needed speed and low-light capability in a compact package.
Optical quality is good in the centre but corners are soft wide open on full-frame bodies, improving significantly by f/4. Chromatic aberration is visible on high-contrast edges. Ring USM autofocus is fast and silent with full-time manual override. Build is compact and lightweight for a fast wide-angle.
Canon EF mount only, 58mm filter thread. On APS-C it provides a 45mm equivalent which is close to a standard perspective. The EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM trades one stop for IS. The RF 28mm f/2.8 STM is the mirrorless alternative.
Affordable used. Check the USM motor and aperture blades. The lens is well-built but the optical design shows its age against modern alternatives. For the price it still offers genuine low-light capability at 28mm.
