Canon's most basic EF kit zoom — the 35-80mm f/4-5.6 with no distinguishing features.
The Canon EF 35-80mm f/4-5.6 is one of Canon's most basic full-frame kit zooms, supplied with the cheapest EOS film and early digital SLRs. The limited 35-80mm range lacks the wide-angle coverage of later 28-80mm designs. Minimal features — no USM, no IS, and basic optical design prioritising cost reduction above all else.
Optical performance is basic. Centre sharpness is acceptable when stopped down. The narrow 35-80mm range limits versatility. The micro-motor AF is audible and slow. No image stabilisation. No USM — the most basic AF drive Canon offered. Adequate for casual daylight photography and learning the basics of SLR operation.
Canon EF mount, full-frame. Filter thread is 52mm — compact. Weight is approximately 175 grams — very light due to all-plastic construction. Build quality is the most basic Canon offered — including a plastic lens mount on most versions. The starting point at 35mm rather than 28mm limits wide-angle capability.
Almost valueless on the used market — often given away free. Check smooth zoom and AF. Not recommended for any deliberate purchase. Almost any other Canon EF zoom is superior. Only of relevance bundled with a camera body. The EF 28-90mm or EF-S 18-55mm IS are dramatically better at similar prices.
