Canon's original EF 35mm f/2 — a simple, compact wide prime from the early EOS era.
The Canon EF 35mm f/2 (original, no IS) was released approximately 1990 as a compact wide prime for Canon EF-mount full-frame. Seven elements in 7 groups. Five aperture blades. 52mm filter thread. At approximately 210g. 0.25m MFD. Screwdrive autofocus. No image stabilisation.
Seven elements in 7 groups (double-Gauss derivative). Five aperture blades. The 52mm filter thread. At approximately 210g. Minimum focus distance of 0.25m. Screwdrive AF (requires body motor). f/2 maximum aperture. Full-frame coverage. Canon EF mount. No IS.
The original EF 35mm f/2 provides a compact, lightweight wide prime for Canon FX bodies without image stabilisation: the 2012 EF 35mm f/2 IS USM added stabilisation but is heavier (335g vs 210g) and more expensive. The double-Gauss optical formula is straightforward and compact. At 52mm filter thread it is smaller than the IS USM version's 67mm.
On the used market the Canon EF 35mm f/2 (original) is very affordable as a compact Canon EF wide prime. Condition checks: screwdrive AF response (requires body AF motor), 52mm front element for marks. No IS. Compatible with Canon EOS EF bodies; on RF via EF-RF adapter.
