The Canon EF 400mm f/4 DO IS USM is a distinctive super-telephoto prime using DO (Diffractive Optics) technology, a multi-layered diffractive element that allows for a dramatically shorter and lighter design than a conventional 400mm f/4 lens. DO technology reduces the physical length by approximately 30% compared to a conventional equivalent. Released in 2001; updated as IS II in 2014.

The DO element's primary trade-off is characteristic DO flare — a coloured ring artifact around bright out-of-focus highlights, which is a known and accepted limitation of DO designs. Test for DO flare in out-of-focus highlights using a specular light source — this is the key characteristic to understand. Test IS function and AF tracking. Inspect the DO front element for damage — the layered DO element is more delicate than standard glass. Confirm EF mount contacts. Verify whether this is IS version 1 or IS II.
