Canon's ultra-fast 50mm L-series prime, prized for its dreamy rendering despite optical quirks.
The Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM is Canon's fastest 50mm EF lens, launched in 2007. With a maximum aperture of f/1.2 it gathers significantly more light than the f/1.4 and f/1.8 alternatives. It has developed a devoted following among portrait photographers who prize its unique rendering characteristics.
Wide open at f/1.2 the lens has a distinctive dreamy quality with very shallow depth of field, soft edges, and noticeable focus shift. It is not clinically sharp wide open and this divides opinion. From f/2 onwards it sharpens significantly. Autofocus is USM but can be slow and inconsistent in low light at f/1.2. Build is excellent L-series with weather sealing.
Canon EF mount only, 72mm filter thread. The RF 50mm f/1.2L USM is the mirrorless successor with dramatically improved optics including wide-open sharpness. The EF version has a unique character that some prefer for its less perfect rendering. The RF version is the technically superior lens.
Commands high prices used reflecting its L-series status and unique character. Check AF accuracy wide open as calibration is critical at f/1.2. Test for focus consistency across multiple shots. The lens is not for those wanting clinical sharpness wide open — it is for those who want a specific aesthetic.
