The Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro launched in 1987 as Canon's compact macro option, providing 1:2 half-life-size magnification. An optional Life-Size Converter EF attachment could extend it to true 1:1, though this accessory is rare.
Optically good — sharp at macro distances with the 50mm focal length providing a compact design. The 1:2 magnification is half-life-size — adequate for many macro subjects but limiting for insect detail. Micro-USM motor. Also functions as a general 50mm prime.
Canon EF mount with 52mm filter thread. Approximately 280g — compact for a macro. Full-frame coverage. Micro-USM AF. Minimum focus distance 23cm at 1:2. The Life-Size Converter extends to 1:1 but is extremely rare.
Available used very cheaply. The 100mm f/2.8L IS Macro is dramatically better with 1:1 built in. The 1:2 limitation and micro-USM motor are the main drawbacks. The Life-Size Converter is collectors' territory. A compact budget macro for casual close-up work.
