Canon's original L-series 70-200mm f/2.8, the professional telephoto that started a dynasty.
The Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM was released in 1995 as Canon's first professional constant-aperture telephoto zoom in the L-series — predating the IS version (2001) and IS II (2010) that followed. It has no Image Stabiliser, which is the defining distinction from both later variants. The ring-type USM motor provides fast, silent autofocus. At approximately 1,310g it is lighter than the IS (approximately 1,470g) and IS II (approximately 1,490g), making the original the most portable of the three f/2.8L 70-200mm EF variants.
The optical design uses 18 elements in 15 groups. The 77mm filter thread is the L-series professional standard, consistent across all three 70-200mm f/2.8L variants — a single filter set covers the range. At approximately 1,310g the lens is the lightest of the three f/2.8L 70-200mm versions despite its earlier design generation. Minimum focus distance is 1.5m throughout the zoom range — longer than the 1.2m of the f/4L variants. Eight aperture blades produce out-of-focus rendering. The ring-type USM motor is fast and silent with full-time manual focus override. L-series dust and moisture sealing is built in. There is no Image Stabiliser.
As a professional constant f/2.8 telephoto zoom the original 70-200mm f/2.8L USM covers event, portrait, wedding, and sports photography across the standard professional telephoto range. The absence of IS is the primary limitation versus the IS and IS II versions: for handheld telephoto work in lower light or video, the later IS variants provide meaningful additional capability. For tripod-mounted or monopod-supported shooting where IS is less critical, the original's lighter weight and lower price are practical advantages. On EOS R bodies via adapter, body IBIS on the R5 and R6 partially compensates for the absent optical IS.
On the used market the original non-IS 70-200mm f/2.8L USM is widely available and the least expensive of the three f/2.8L 70-200mm EF variants. Condition checks: ring USM response across the full focus travel, front element for any coating damage from filter use, and weather sealing at the zoom barrel. The IS version adds Image Stabiliser at a moderate premium; the IS II added a revised optical formula and improved IS. Compatible with all Canon EOS DSLRs and via EF-RF adapter on EOS R bodies.
