Canon's original L-series 70-200mm f/2.8, the professional telephoto that started a dynasty.
The Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM was launched in 1995 as Canon's first fast professional telephoto zoom in the modern EF mount era. Without image stabilisation, it relies on the constant f/2.8 aperture for low-light capability. It established the 70-200mm f/2.8 as the essential professional zoom.
Optical quality is good with solid sharpness, particularly in the 70-135mm range. Performance at 200mm is slightly softer than later IS versions. Ring USM autofocus is fast and reliable. Build is classic L-series with weather sealing and a robust metal construction. The lens has a distinctive push-pull zoom feel on older copies.
Canon EF mount only, 77mm filter thread. Superseded by the IS, IS II, and IS III versions which add stabilisation and improve optics. The non-IS version remains usable and is dramatically cheaper on the used market.
Very cheap used compared to the IS versions. Check the USM motor, zoom ring mechanism, and internal condition. The lack of IS is a real limitation at 200mm handheld. For studio or well-lit outdoor work where IS is not critical this remains an optically capable and affordable professional lens.
