Canon's compact L-series telephoto zoom without IS, lightweight and sharp for the price.
The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM was launched in 1999 as a compact, lightweight alternative to the heavier f/2.8L version. At roughly half the weight and a significantly lower price, it brought L-series telephoto quality to photographers who valued portability over the wider aperture.
Optical quality is excellent with sharp results across the frame from wide open. Many reviewers consider it sharper than the f/2.8L at equivalent apertures. Ring USM autofocus is fast and silent. Build is L-series with a metal barrel and weather sealing. The lack of IS is the only significant limitation.
Canon EF mount only, 67mm filter thread. The IS version followed in 2006 adding image stabilisation. The IS II added improved IS in 2018. The RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM is the mirrorless version. The non-IS original remains the lightest and cheapest option.
Excellent value used as one of the best deals in Canon's L-series lineup. Check USM motor, zoom ring, and overall condition. The lack of IS limits handheld use at 200mm but this is easily one of the sharpest zoom lenses Canon has ever made. Superb for travel and outdoor photography.
