Canon's compact L-series telephoto zoom without IS, lightweight and sharp for the price.
The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM (non-IS version) was released in 2006 as the lightweight, lower-cost alternative to the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS within Canon's L-series telephoto zoom range. At approximately 705g it is considerably lighter than the f/2.8 version, and the f/4 maximum aperture accepts this as a weight and cost trade-off appropriate for photographers who work primarily in good light or from a tripod. An IS version — the 70-200mm f/4L IS USM — was released the same year with Image Stabiliser at additional cost and weight.
The optical design uses 16 elements in 13 groups, including two fluorite and two UD elements. The 67mm filter thread is the standard for Canon L-series f/4 telephoto zooms, shared with the 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L. At approximately 705g the lens is substantially lighter than the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II, making it more practical for extended handheld use. Minimum focus distance is 1.2m throughout the zoom range. Eight rounded aperture blades produce smooth bokeh at wider apertures. The ring-type USM motor is fast and silent with full-time manual focus override. L-series dust and moisture sealing is built in throughout.
For landscape, wildlife, and travel use where weight is a consideration the 70-200mm f/4L provides consistent L-series optical quality at a significantly lower carry weight than the f/2.8 equivalent. Sharpness is strong from f/4 through the full zoom range on full-frame; on APS-C bodies the 112-320mm equivalent provides useful telephoto compression. The absence of IS is the primary practical limitation: for handheld work in lower light or at the 200mm end, the IS version provides meaningful additional capability.
On the used market the non-IS 70-200mm f/4L USM is widely available at lower prices than the IS version. Condition checks: ring USM response, L-series sealing at the zoom barrel, and front element filter thread for any damage. The IS version adds Image Stabiliser at a modest premium and is the recommended choice for photographers who regularly shoot handheld at telephoto distances. The RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM is the Z-system equivalent for EOS R users. Compatible with all Canon EOS DSLRs and via EF-RF adapter on EOS R bodies.
