Tiny retractable kit zoom for Canon's discontinued EOS M mirrorless system.
The Canon EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM is the standard kit lens for Canon's EOS M-series APS-C mirrorless cameras, covering 24-72mm equivalent. Launched in 2015 alongside the EOS M3, it replaced the earlier EF-M 18-55mm as the default bundle lens. The defining feature is its retractable barrel design: when the camera is powered off the barrel collapses to a 22mm package depth, making it the most compact kit available for the EOS M system. The optical formula uses 10 elements in 8 groups including one UD element and two aspherical elements. Image stabilisation provides approximately 3.5 stops. STM autofocus is smooth and near-silent, suited to continuous video tracking. At 130g with a 49mm filter thread, it is among the lightest kit zooms Canon has produced for any system.
Optical performance is competent for a kit zoom. Centre sharpness is good at mid-focal lengths with the best results around 24-35mm equivalent. At 15mm wide, corner performance is soft wide open and acceptable by f/5.6. At 45mm the centre is sharp with moderate corner fall-off. IS is effective for stills at shutter speeds below 1/60s at the wide end and useful for video stabilisation. STM autofocus is reliable in good light and sufficiently fast for everyday subjects; Canon's Dual Pixel AF on compatible M bodies (M50, M50 II, M6 II) works well with this lens for face and eye tracking. The retractable mechanism introduces a brief operational delay requiring a quarter-twist to unlock before shooting.
EF-M mount only — this mount is incompatible with Canon RF and EF bodies without third-party adapters, and Canon produced no native EF-M to RF adapter. The EOS M system was discontinued by Canon in 2022 in favour of the RF-S APS-C mirrorless line. Canon EF-M lenses have no upgrade path within the Canon ecosystem. The 49mm filter thread accepts standard accessories. The retractable barrel requires engaging the unlock lever before the zoom ring operates; check this mechanism extends and collapses cleanly on used copies. Plastic construction throughout including the mount. No weather sealing.
The EF-M 15-45mm IS STM is inexpensive used because it is tied to a discontinued system. For existing EOS M owners using an M6 II, M50 II, or M200, it remains a practical and compact lens for everyday use; the system bodies still function correctly and Canon supports them. Buyers considering entering the EOS M system should weigh the absence of upgrade path against the low entry cost — RF-S offers the same APS-C mirrorless sensor quality with a future-proof ecosystem. Key checks: confirm the retractable barrel extends and locks correctly, test IS and STM AF both operate cleanly, and check for any stiffness in the zoom ring.
