Canon's budget ultra-wide with IS and STM — the popular 10-18mm for APS-C video and landscape work.
The Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM was released in 2014 as Canon's most affordable ultra-wide zoom for APS-C DSLRs. Covering a 16-29mm equivalent range with both IS stabilisation and STM stepping motor AF, it brought ultra-wide photography and video within reach of budget Canon shooters. The combination of IS and STM was unusual and valuable at this price.
Optical performance is good for the price. Sharpness is respectable across the frame, particularly in the centre. IS provides approximately 4 stops of stabilisation — unusual for an ultra-wide and valuable for handheld shooting. STM motor is smooth and virtually silent, excellent for video. Distortion is present but well-managed by Canon's in-camera lens correction.
Canon EF-S mount, APS-C only. Filter thread is 67mm. Weight is approximately 240 grams — remarkably light. Build quality is basic plastic but functional. The combination of IS, STM, and ultra-wide coverage at this weight and price is impressive. No weather sealing. The slow variable aperture is the main compromise.
Very affordable on the used market. Check IS and STM motor operation. One of the best budget ultra-wide zooms ever made — the IS and STM combination makes it particularly valuable for video. The Canon RF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM is the mirrorless successor. Highly recommended for Canon APS-C DSLR shooters.
