Canon's affordable ultra-wide zoom for APS-C, the cheapest way into wide-angle photography.
The Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM was launched in 2014 as Canon's most affordable ultra-wide zoom for the EF-S system, covering a 16-29mm equivalent range on APS-C. It significantly undercut the existing EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM on price while adding optical image stabilisation and an STM stepping motor — two features the more expensive lens lacks. Built-in IS is particularly practical at ultra-wide focal lengths for architecture, real estate interiors, and slow-exposure landscape work. The combination of price, IS, and STM made it the default ultra-wide recommendation for Canon APS-C DSLR users.
The optical design uses 14 elements in 11 groups. The 67mm filter thread is larger than the 58mm size on most Canon EF-S lenses — filters from kit zooms and standard primes will not fit without a step-up ring. At 240g the lens is considerably lighter than the EF-S 10-22mm USM, making it the weight-conscious choice for ultra-wide coverage. A minimum focus distance of 0.22m allows close perspective shots with the dramatic wide-angle exaggeration the focal length provides. Canon specifies up to 4 stops of IS compensation, practical for handheld interiors and low-light wide-angle work. The STM stepping motor is smooth and quiet, suitable for video recording. Distortion at 10mm is well controlled for an ultra-wide zoom at this price tier. Variable aperture runs from f/4.5 at 10mm to f/5.6 at 18mm; build is lightweight plastic with no weather sealing.
At 10mm — a 16mm equivalent — the lens provides an extreme field of view for environmental portraits, dramatic landscape perspectives, building interiors, and real estate photography. IS helps with the longer exposures sometimes needed inside buildings. The STM motor enables smooth continuous AF during video at wide angles. Sharpness in the centre is good across the range; corners improve when stopped down to f/8. Chromatic aberration is moderate for an ultra-wide. The 29mm equivalent at 18mm provides natural coverage for indoor group photography where moderate wide-angle is preferable.
On the used market the 10-18mm IS STM is excellent value and consistently the recommended EF-S ultra-wide. Condition checks: IS operation, STM motor response, and front element for scratches. The 67mm filter accepts standard wide-angle filters for landscape and architectural use. The EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM offers a faster aperture and USM motor but no IS; which is preferable depends on the shooting situation. Via the EF-RF adapter on EOS R-series bodies the lens functions fully. One of the best-value ultra-wide zooms in any APS-C system.
