Canon's premium APS-C standard zoom with wide 24mm equivalent coverage and excellent optics.
The Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM was released in 2009 as Canon's premium standard zoom for APS-C EOS DSLRs. Covering a 24-136mm equivalent range, it offered significantly more versatility than the basic 18-55mm kit lens while maintaining good optical quality throughout — a genuine upgrade that many Canon APS-C shooters considered the ideal walk-around lens.
Optical performance is very good for a standard zoom. Sharpness is impressive across the frame, particularly in the mid-range. The IS system provides approximately 4 stops of stabilisation, effective for handheld shooting at longer focal lengths. USM ring-type motor delivers fast, silent autofocus with full-time manual override. Image quality is noticeably better than the 18-135mm alternatives.
Canon EF-S mount, APS-C only. Filter thread is 72mm. Weight is approximately 575 grams — moderate for the range covered. Build quality is solid with a quality feel above typical kit lenses. The 15mm wide end gives a useful 24mm equivalent — wider than the 18-55mm's 29mm equivalent. No weather sealing.
Good availability on the used market at reasonable prices. Check for smooth IS operation and clean optics. One of the best standard zooms Canon ever made for APS-C — the wide 24mm equivalent starting point and consistent sharpness set it apart. The Canon RF-S 18-150mm has taken over for the mirrorless era, but this remains excellent on DSLR bodies.
