Canon's popular mid-range APS-C superzoom with IS and quiet STM autofocus.
The Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM was introduced in 2013 as Canon's versatile all-in-one APS-C zoom. Covering a 29-216mm equivalent range with IS and an STM motor, it replaced the earlier IS version and was bundled with bodies like the EOS 70D and 760D as a higher-tier kit option.
Optical quality is good for a superzoom with sharp centre performance at moderate focal lengths. Corners soften at the extremes as expected. IS provides approximately 4 stops of stabilisation. The STM motor enables smooth, quiet autofocus ideal for video, particularly effective with Canon's Dual Pixel AF. Build is plastic with a metal mount.
Canon EF-S mount only, 67mm filter thread. The Nano USM version succeeded it in 2016 with an even faster and quieter motor. The earlier IS version without STM is noisier. The 18-135mm range covers most everyday situations without lens changes.
Good value used. Check IS operation and STM motor. Compare the STM and Nano USM versions if both are available at similar prices. The Nano USM is the better lens but both are strong all-in-one options. Excellent for travel and everyday photography where carrying one lens is preferred.
