Canon's APS-C superzoom covering a wide 29-320mm equivalent range with IS.
The Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS is Canon's APS-C superzoom covering an ambitious 29-320mm equivalent range in one lens. Launched in 2008, it targets travellers who want maximum versatility without changing lenses. The IS stabilisation helps compensate for the long telephoto end.
Optical quality follows the typical superzoom pattern of adequate centre sharpness at moderate focal lengths with softening at both extremes. Distortion is noticeable at 18mm. IS provides approximately 4 stops. The lens is larger and heavier than the 18-135mm range at 595g.
Canon EF-S mount only, 72mm filter thread. The 18-135mm IS STM covers most of this range with better optical quality at lower weight. The Tamron 18-200mm and Sigma 18-200mm are third-party alternatives. True superzoom versatility versus optical quality is the core trade-off.
Moderate value used. Check IS operation and zoom ring for creep at the telephoto end. The 18-135mm IS STM or Nano USM is a better balanced alternative for most users. The 18-200mm is only justified when the extra reach is genuinely needed and carrying two lenses is not an option.
