Basic Canon APS-C kit zoom with no image stabilisation and no STM motor.
The Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 III is the most stripped-down version of Canon's long-running APS-C kit lens. Introduced around 2011 and bundled with entry-level bodies like the EOS 1100D, it covers the 29-88mm equivalent range. It has no image stabilisation and no STM motor, just a basic DC autofocus.
Optically it performs adequately for a kit lens. Centre sharpness is reasonable at most focal lengths, but corners are soft, especially at 18mm wide open. There is visible barrel distortion at the wide end. Build quality is entirely plastic including the mount. Autofocus is audible and not suitable for video work.
This is a Canon EF-S mount only lens with a 58mm filter thread. It should not be confused with the IS, IS II, IS STM, or other versions which are all distinct and generally better lenses. The III designation means third generation of the non-IS variant.
Very common on the used market and extremely cheap. There is little to go wrong mechanically. Check the autofocus motor responds and the zoom action is smooth. At these prices, any issues make it not worth repairing. The IS STM version is a far better buy for a few pounds more.
