Canon's first-generation stabilised 18-55mm kit zoom, adding IS to the EF-S staple.
The Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS is the original Image Stabiliser version of Canon's APS-C kit zoom, introduced in 2007. It was one of the first Canon EF-S lenses to include IS and was widely bundled with the EOS 400D, 450D, and similar entry-level DSLRs of the era. The IS system was rated at approximately 3.5 stops; the DC micro-motor AF was functional for stills but audible and unsuited to video recording. A revised IS II version (2008) and STM version (2013) followed.
The optical design uses 11 elements in 9 groups, including one aspherical element. The 58mm filter thread is shared with most Canon EF-S kit zoom generations, making filter carry-over practical across Canon APS-C setups. At approximately 200g the lens adds minimal weight to a kit body. A minimum focus distance of 0.25m enables informal close-up work on small subjects. IS provides approximately 3.5 stops of shake correction, useful for handheld stills in lower light. The DC micro-motor AF is reliable for stills but audible and not suited for video recording. Variable aperture runs from f/3.5 at 18mm to f/5.6 at 55mm.
For stills photography the IS provides a practical extension of handheld shooting range in lower light relative to the non-IS 18-55mm II. The DC motor AF is reliable for static and moderately paced subjects; the audible operation is unsuited for video capture. The lens performs identically across all Canon APS-C EOS DSLRs. Optical quality is consistent with the Canon EF-S 18-55mm family at mid-apertures; corners at 18mm wide open show softening typical of kit zooms.
On the used market the original IS version is among the most affordable Canon EF-S lenses. The EF-S 18-55mm IS STM provides a significantly better experience for video and is the recommended choice for any purchase intended to serve both stills and video. Condition checks: IS engagement, DC motor AF response, zoom ring smoothness, and front element for scratches. The 58mm filter thread is consistent with most Canon APS-C kit lenses. Adequate for stills-only kit use at minimal cost.
