Canon's first-generation stabilised 18-55mm kit zoom, adding IS to the EF-S staple.
The Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS was the first Canon APS-C kit lens to include image stabilisation, introduced around 2008. Bundled with bodies like the EOS 450D and 500D, it represented a significant step up from the non-IS versions by providing handheld shooting at slower shutter speeds.
Optical quality is similar to the non-IS variants with adequate centre sharpness and soft corners. IS provides approximately 4 stops of stabilisation, the major selling point over earlier versions. Autofocus uses a noisy DC micro-motor. Build is all-plastic with a metal mount.
Canon EF-S mount only, 58mm filter thread. This was the first in the IS line, followed by the IS II, IS STM, and f/4-5.6 IS STM versions. Each generation improved either the optics, motor, or both.
Very cheap used. Check IS operation carefully as this was the first generation and older units may have worn IS mechanisms. The IS STM version is a dramatically better lens and worth the small premium.
