Canon's newest EF-S kit zoom with a slightly slower aperture but more compact design.
The Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/4-5.6 IS STM was introduced in 2017 as an update to the f/3.5-5.6 IS STM. The slightly slower aperture allowed a more compact design. It was bundled with the EOS 200D and 250D, targeting photographers who valued portability over the marginal aperture advantage.
Optically it is very similar to its f/3.5-5.6 predecessor with good centre sharpness and adequate corners. IS provides approximately 4 stops of stabilisation. The STM motor is smooth and quiet for video. The lens is noticeably smaller and lighter than the f/3.5-5.6 version. Build is plastic with a metal mount.
Canon EF-S mount only, 58mm filter thread. This is the most recent evolution of the EF-S 18-55mm line. The half-stop slower aperture at the wide end is barely noticeable in practice. It was one of the last EF-S lenses Canon released before shifting focus entirely to RF-mount.
Cheap used. Functionally identical to the f/3.5-5.6 IS STM for practical purposes. Check IS and STM operation. The slightly more compact size makes it a good match for the smaller EOS 200D and 250D bodies. Either this or the f/3.5-5.6 IS STM is an excellent choice.
