Canon's APS-C macro with built-in LED light — 56mm equiv at f/2.8 with IS and Macro Lite ring.
The Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM was released in 2015 as a compact macro prime for Canon EOS APS-C bodies, achieving 1:1 life-size magnification at 0.13m minimum focus distance. Ten elements in 6 groups. Seven aperture blades. 49mm filter thread. At 190g. Hybrid IS (4 stops). Built-in LED macro ring light. STM autofocus.
The optical design uses 10 elements in 6 groups. Seven aperture blades. The 49mm filter thread. At 190g the lens is very lightweight. Minimum focus distance of 0.13m; 1:1 (life-size) magnification. Hybrid IS (angular + shift correction) rated 4 stops. STM for quiet AF. Built-in LED macro ring light activated via dedicated button. f/2.8 maximum aperture. APS-C image circle (EF-S).
The built-in LED ring light addresses the working distance problem: at 1:1 magnification and 13cm MFD, the lens barrel itself can block external flash illumination. The built-in LED provides controllable ring lighting at the extreme close distance where front-mounted flash would be blocked. The Hybrid IS's shift-correction component is specifically effective at macro distances where camera translation dominates.
On the used market the Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM is affordable as a compact APS-C macro prime. Condition checks: STM AF response, Hybrid IS engagement, LED ring light function, 49mm front element for marks. APS-C only (EF-S). Compatible with all Canon EOS APS-C bodies with EF-S mount.
