The best Canon EF-S telephoto zoom, combining sharp optics with quiet STM autofocus.
The Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM was released in 2013 as the second-generation EF-S telephoto kit zoom, replacing the original IS II version with an STM motor for quiet continuous AF suited to video recording. Alongside the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM, it was developed as the standard APS-C two-lens kit for the EOS 70D generation and later. On APS-C the 55-250mm covers an 88-400mm full-frame equivalent range.
The optical design uses 15 elements in 12 groups. Seven circular aperture blades produce smooth bokeh. The 58mm filter thread is consistent with the EF-S 18-55mm STM kit zoom for filter carry-over in a standard APS-C two-lens kit. At 375g the lens is moderate for a 250mm telephoto zoom. Minimum focus distance of 0.85m. IS provides handheld stability at the telephoto end. STM motor enables quiet continuous AF for video shooting. Variable aperture from f/4 at 55mm to f/5.6 at 250mm.
The STM motor is the defining practical improvement over the original IS II: it provides near-silent, smooth focus pulls for video that the original's micro USM motor could not achieve quietly. For Canon APS-C video work with continuous AF, the STM version provides a substantially better experience. The 88-400mm equivalent range covers outdoor events, wildlife at moderate distances, and sports photography within the APS-C telephoto tier. IS extends handheld capability at 250mm for outdoor daylight use.
On the used market the EF-S 55-250mm IS STM is widely available at affordable prices. Condition checks: STM motor response (test continuous AF during video for smoothness), IS engagement, zoom ring smoothness, and front element for marks. The 58mm filter thread matches the EF-S 18-55mm STM for single-filter kit compatibility. Compatible with all Canon EOS APS-C DSLR and Mirrorless bodies (via adapter); the APS-C image circle prevents use on full-frame EOS DSLR bodies without significant vignetting.
