Canon EOS 1000 variant with eye-control AF for intuitive focus point selection, innovative tech in a budget film SLR.
The Canon EOS 1000FN is a further refined variant of the EOS 1000 series, combining the improvements of the 1000F with additional features including an eye-controlled autofocus system that detects which part of the viewfinder the photographer is looking at and activates the corresponding focus point automatically.
The eye-control AF system uses infrared sensors in the viewfinder eyepiece to track the photographer's eye position, allowing focus point selection without removing the eye from the viewfinder or pressing any buttons. This innovative feature, first seen on the EOS 5/A2E, trickled down to the budget range with the 1000FN.
All other specifications match the EOS 1000F, including three-point autofocus, 1/2000s maximum shutter speed, and full Canon EF mount compatibility. The camera maintains the lightweight plastic construction and comprehensive exposure modes that defined the budget EOS range throughout the 1990s.
The EOS 1000FN offers a slight edge over the 1000F on the used market thanks to the eye-control AF feature, though this system requires calibration to each individual user and may not function reliably after decades of use. When working correctly, it provides a genuinely useful and surprisingly intuitive way to select focus points.
