Canon's professional sports DSLR — the EOS 1D Mark II N with APS-H sensor and 8.5fps.
The Canon EOS 1D Mark II N was released in 2005 as an update to the 1D Mark II — Canon's flagship sports DSLR. Featuring an 8.2MP APS-H sensor (1.3x crop), it provided a compromise between full-frame coverage and the reach advantage of crop factor. The N update improved the LCD and added Picture Style. It was the workhorse of sports photography in the mid-2000s.
Image quality from the 8.2MP APS-H sensor is good for the era. The 1.3x crop provides useful extra reach with telephoto lenses while maintaining better depth of field control than APS-C. 8.5fps continuous shooting with 45-point AF was class-leading. Excellent high-ISO performance for the time — usable to ISO 3200. No video capability.
Canon EF mount — the 1.3x crop means slightly tighter framing than full-frame. Weight is approximately 1,225 grams body only — built for professional durability. Build quality is outstanding with full magnesium alloy weather sealing. Dual card slots (CF and SD). Integrated vertical grip. Battery life exceeds 1,200 shots. Professional AF system with predictive tracking.
Available at very low used prices — two decades of successors have reduced demand. Check shutter count, AF accuracy, and sensor. Thoroughly outdated for resolution but the professional build and AF system remain impressive. Only of interest at very low prices or for photographers who want a professional camera body for testing EF lenses.
