Canon's smallest DSLR with 4K video, a vari-angle screen, and modern connectivity.
The Canon EOS 250D was introduced in April 2019, replacing the 200D as Canon's entry-level DSLR. Marketed as the Rebel SL3 in North America and Kiss X10 in Japan, Canon positioned it as the world's lightest DSLR with a vari-angle screen at launch. It brought the DIGIC 8 processor, 4K video, and eye-detect AF in live view — capabilities previously limited to the mid-range EOS tier — into a body barely larger than a compact camera. The fully articulated 3-inch touchscreen and built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth gave it a content-creation orientation unusual for an entry DSLR.
The 24.1MP APS-C CMOS sensor pairs with the DIGIC 8 processor. The optical viewfinder uses a 9-point AF system with one central cross-type point; the remaining eight are linear-sensitive only, which limits off-centre subject acquisition in OVF mode. Dual Pixel CMOS AF in live view and video provides precise coverage across the frame — a substantially more capable AF experience than the OVF system for static and video work. At 5fps the burst rate suits casual sequential shooting. 4K records with a 1.6x crop applied on top of the APS-C sensor's 1.6x crop, for a combined 2.56x reduction from full frame; 1080p is the more practical video mode for most use. Battery life is rated at approximately 1070 shots per charge in OVF mode using the LP-E17. At 449g with battery and card the body is compact; a single SD/SDHC/SDXC slot handles storage.
The 250D's compact size is its defining practical characteristic — noticeably smaller in hand than Canon mid-range DSLRs such as the 90D or 80D, a difference felt immediately on extended carry. The vari-angle touchscreen, Dual Pixel CMOS AF, and eye-detect tracking make it capable for vlogging and social content in a DSLR form factor that fits smaller bags than any competing category. OVF shooting is the limiting mode: the single cross-type centre point requires deliberate framing, and the 9-point spread does not reach frame edges for off-axis acquisition. Sensor performance is strong at base ISO and usable through ISO 3200. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enable tethering and remote control via Canon's Camera Connect app.
On the used market the 250D is well priced for its capability set. The Canon EOS R50 (2023) is the direct mirrorless equivalent — often at comparable used prices and worth considering if OVF preference is not a factor. Condition checks: vari-angle hinge articulation (test smoothness in all positions), Dual Pixel AF response in live view, and battery health. The LP-E17 is shared with the EOS R, M50, and M50 Mark II, keeping spares widely available. Canon rates the shutter at 100,000 actuations; verify count via EXIF.
