Canon's second-generation affordable full-frame DSLR with Dual Pixel AF and flip screen.
The Canon EOS 6D Mark II was announced in June 2017 as the successor to the original 6D, bringing a fully articulating touchscreen, Dual Pixel CMOS AF in live view, and a new 45-point all-cross-type AF system to Canon's accessible full-frame DSLR tier. The articulating screen was a significant practical addition for the 6D's core travel, landscape, and video audience. It was introduced without 4K video recording — a notable omission against contemporaneous competitors — recording only up to 1080p. Built-in GPS and WiFi were retained from the original 6D.
The 26.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor incorporates Dual Pixel CMOS AF and pairs with the DIGIC 7 processor. The 45 all-cross-type AF points provide reliable OVF acquisition in the central frame area; Dual Pixel CMOS AF provides smooth, continuous focus in live view and video. Burst shooting runs at 6.5fps. 1080p video records at up to 60fps; there is no 4K recording mode. The fully articulating 3.0-inch touchscreen at 1,040k dots enables low-angle and overhead framing. Built-in GPS enables location tagging; WiFi supports wireless image transfer. Basic dust and moisture resistance is built in. Battery life approximately 1,200 shots via OVF using the LP-E6N, body weight approximately 765g with battery and card, single SD/SDHC/SDXC slot.
The 6D Mark II's Dual Pixel CMOS AF is its primary operational advance over the original 6D for live view and video work — smooth continuous tracking replaced the slow contrast-detect AF of the earlier model. For landscape, travel, and portrait photography the 26.2MP sensor provides capable full-frame image quality. The articulating screen is a practical field advantage for tripod-mounted landscape composition and video framing. The absence of 4K was widely criticised at launch and remains the main video specification gap; for photographers primarily using the OVF the 1080p/60fps ceiling may not be a limiting constraint.
On the used market the 6D Mark II is a competitive full-frame entry point for EF-mount photographers. The single SD slot and absence of 4K are the principal specification limitations for video-oriented buyers. Condition checks: articulating screen hinge (a high-use mechanism on this body), shutter count via EXIF, LP-E6N battery health, and weather sealing at body seams and buttons. The original 6D is available at lower prices for OVF-focused photographers who do not need DPAF or the articulating screen. Compatible with all Canon EF-mount lenses and via EF-RF adapter on EOS R bodies.
