Canon's mid-range APS-C DSLR with Dual Pixel AF, top LCD, and secondary dial.
The Canon EOS 77D was announced in February 2017 as a mid-tier APS-C DSLR positioned above the 800D/Rebel T7i, sharing the same sensor but providing significantly more physical control — dual command dials, an AF-ON button, and a top LCD panel — for experienced photographers who prefer direct physical access over menu navigation. Both bodies share the 24MP CMOS sensor with Dual Pixel CMOS AF for smooth live view and video tracking. No 4K recording and no weather sealing are the defining specification gaps.
The 24MP APS-C CMOS sensor incorporates Dual Pixel CMOS AF. The OVF uses a 45-point all-cross-type AF system for fast, reliable stills acquisition. Burst shooting runs at 6fps. 1080p video records at up to 60fps; there is no 4K recording mode. Dual Pixel CMOS AF provides smooth continuous tracking in live view and video. No weather sealing is provided. Battery life approximately 600 shots using the LP-E17, body weight approximately 540g with battery and card, single SD/SDHC/SDXC slot.
The 77D's practical position is between the entry-level 800D and the more professional 80D. The dual-dial control layout provides faster direct access to exposure settings than the 800D's beginner-oriented interface — the front command dial changes one exposure parameter and the rear dial changes another simultaneously, enabling quick manual or semi-manual adjustments without button presses. DPAF in video mode enables smooth subject tracking. The absence of 4K and weather sealing are the primary limitations versus the 80D.
On the used market the 77D is competitively priced. Condition checks: DPAF operation in live view video mode, OVF AF responsiveness, shutter count via EXIF, and LP-E17 battery health. The 80D provides weather sealing and a higher-end build at a modest premium. The LP-E17 battery is shared with the Canon EOS M3, M5, M6, 200D, and 250D — spares are widely available. Compatible with all Canon EF and EF-S lenses.
