Canon's first full-frame mirrorless, pioneering the RF mount system.
The Canon EOS R was announced in September 2018 as Canon's first full-frame RF-mount mirrorless camera, introducing the RF mount's wider 54mm internal diameter and shorter 20mm flange distance — specifications that enable larger rear elements and better optical correction than the earlier EF mount. The 30.3MP full-frame CMOS sensor and DIGIC 8 processor were paired with Dual Pixel CMOS AF covering 88% of the frame. It established the foundation of the RF system before the RP, R5, R6, and subsequent bodies expanded the lineup.
The 30.3MP full-frame CMOS sensor pairs with the DIGIC 8 processor. Dual Pixel CMOS AF covers 88% of the horizontal frame and 88% of the vertical frame with up to 5,655 selectable AF positions, providing comprehensive coverage for stills and video. At 5fps the burst rate suits portraits and events. 4K video records at up to 30fps from the full sensor width, without a crop — a significant distinction from the concurrent EOS RP's 1.7x 4K crop. Battery life is rated at approximately 370 shots per charge using the LP-E6N. At approximately 660g with battery and card the body is mid-range in weight for a full-frame mirrorless. A single SD/SDHC/SDXC card slot handles storage. There is no IBIS.
The EOS R's practical significance in the RF system is its position as the platform that demonstrated the RF mount's optical potential with early RF lenses. Full-frame 4K without a crop distinguishes it from the RP and was the reason video-focused users chose the R over the RP. Dual Pixel CMOS AF is reliable for portraiture and documentary; subject tracking and eye-detect AF perform well for static and slow-moving subjects. The lack of IBIS means handheld video stability depends on optical IS from the lens or a stabilised platform.
On the used market the EOS R is well-priced for a Canon full-frame RF body. Condition checks: single card slot contacts, Dual Pixel AF response in live view and video, rear screen, and EVF condition. The LP-E6N battery is shared with the 5D Mark IV and 90D — spares are widely available. The EOS R6 provides IBIS, faster AF, and dual card slots at a higher used price; the R is the budget entry for full-frame RF if IBIS is not required. Accepts Canon's EF-RF adapter for the full EF lens catalogue.
