Canon's first full-frame mirrorless, pioneering the RF mount system.
The Canon EOS R was launched in 2018 as Canon's first full-frame mirrorless camera, introducing the RF lens mount that would define Canon's future. With a 30.3MP sensor derived from the 5D Mark IV and Canon's Dual Pixel AF system, it marked the beginning of Canon's transition from DSLR to mirrorless.
Key features include a 30.3MP full-frame sensor, 5655-point Dual Pixel AF with eye detection, a fully articulating touchscreen, 4K video with a heavy crop, and a customisable touch bar on the rear. The single card slot uses SD. There is no IBIS. Burst rate is limited at 5fps with servo AF.
The EOS R proved Canon could build a competitive mirrorless body and launched the RF lens ecosystem. It is criticised for the controversial touch bar that many users disliked, the lack of IBIS, slow burst rate, cropped 4K, and single card slot. The R5 and R6 addressed these criticisms in 2020.
Affordable used as Canon's mirrorless starting point. Check the touch bar functionality, Dual Pixel AF accuracy, and battery condition. The EOS R is significantly cheaper than the R6 and provides access to the RF lens ecosystem. Best suited for stills-focused photographers on a budget.
