Canon's flagship mirrorless for sports — 24.1MP full-frame with eye-control AF, 30fps, and stacked sensor.
The Canon EOS R3 was released in November 2021 as Canon's professional-tier mirrorless body, featuring a 24.1MP full-frame back-illuminated stacked CMOS sensor and up to 30fps continuous shooting with the electronic shutter. Eye Control AF — tracking the photographer's gaze within the viewfinder for AF target selection — was revived here after its 1993 debut on the EOS-1N film camera. 4K/120fps 10-bit and 6K/60fps RAW video are available. LP-E19 battery.
The 24.1MP full-frame stacked BSI CMOS sensor provides 30fps electronic (12fps mechanical). Eye Control AF detects gaze direction for subject selection. 4K/120fps 10-bit uncropped and 6K/60fps RAW video. LP-E19 battery. Body weight approximately 1,015g with battery and card (approximately 822g body only). Dual card slots. Professional weather sealing.
The stacked CMOS architecture provides read-out speed for 30fps continuous without the rolling shutter distortion of conventional sensors at high frame rates — the R3 approaches the blackout-free high-frame-rate behaviour of the EOS-1D X III. Eye Control AF adds gaze-detection as a fourth AF input mode: the photographer looks at the desired subject area within the EVF to suggest initial AF acquisition, in addition to touch, joystick, and scene detection.
On the used market the Canon EOS R3 is available at professional mirrorless pricing between the EOS R5 and EOS R1. Condition checks: Eye Control AF calibration — requires per-user setup in camera menu — electronic shutter operation, both card slot contacts, LP-E19 battery health (shared with 1DX series and EOS R1), and weather sealing. Compatible with all Canon RF-mount lenses.
