Canon's cinema-focused R5 variant with active cooling for unlimited 8K recording.
The Canon EOS R5 C was released in February 2022 as a cinema-oriented variant of the EOS R5, retaining the 45MP full-frame CMOS sensor and RF mount but adding a built-in active cooling fan that eliminates the thermal throttling that limited the original R5's extended 8K recording sessions. Unlike the R5, the R5 C deliberately omits in-body image stabilisation — a design decision mirroring the GH5S and other cinema-primary bodies where IBIS interferes with gimbal and stabiliser rig operation.
The 45MP full-frame CMOS sensor records 8K RAW Light internally at up to 30fps using Canon Cinema RAW Light codec, and 4K at up to 120fps for slow-motion. The active cooling fan enables unlimited recording duration that the R5's passive cooling cannot sustain. No in-body image stabilisation — stabilisation relies on compatible RF lens IS or an external gimbal. Dual card slots (CFexpress Type B and SD UHS-II) are provided. Battery is the LP-E6NH, body weight approximately 680g with battery and card.
The active cooling fan is the R5 C's primary practical improvement over the R5 for video production: unlimited 8K recording duration without the interruptions that thermal throttling imposed on the R5 at launch. The deliberate absence of IBIS addresses cinema and gimbal workflows where the sensor-shift mechanism complicates rig balancing. The 45MP sensor provides resolution adequate for 8K output and large-format stills from a single body.
On the used market the R5 C is available at cinema RF body pricing below its launch cost. Condition checks: active fan operation (confirm it spins under load), both card slot contacts, LP-E6NH battery health, and weather sealing at body and port covers. No IBIS — confirm before purchase if handheld stabilisation is required. The Canon EOS R5 provides IBIS for stills-primary use at lower cost. Compatible with all Canon RF-mount lenses.
