Canon's cheapest full-frame mirrorless, a gateway to the RF system at a budget price.
The Canon EOS RP was introduced in February 2019 as the most affordable Canon full-frame RF-mount mirrorless camera at launch. It offered a 26.2MP full-frame sensor with Dual Pixel CMOS AF in a lighter and lower-cost body than the original EOS R, establishing the entry point for Canon full-frame mirrorless. The LP-E17 battery and single SD card slot reflected the RP's budget positioning — it was designed as a gateway body rather than a professional tool, optimised for photographers entering the RF ecosystem.
The 26.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor pairs with the DIGIC 8 processor. The 4779-zone Dual Pixel CMOS AF covers the frame comprehensively, with eye-detect AF for human subjects. At 5fps the burst rate suits portraits and events. 4K video records at up to 25fps with an approximately 1.7x crop from the full-frame sensor; 1080p is the more practical mode for most video use. Battery life is rated at approximately 250 shots per charge using the LP-E17 — significantly below most mirrorless competitors, making spare batteries essential for all-day use. At 485g with battery and card the body is compact for full-frame; a single SD/SDHC/SDXC slot handles storage.
The RP's practical value is its price-to-capability ratio for full-frame photography: the 26.2MP sensor and Dual Pixel CMOS AF deliver image quality and subject-tracking performance that are genuinely full-frame capable. The 1080p video mode is the practical choice for most use — 4K's 1.7x crop and 25fps cap limit its production versatility. Battery endurance is the primary operational consideration: two or three LP-E17 cells is the recommended carry for a full shooting day. The RF mount's wide-diameter throat ensures the RP benefits from the same RF-native lens ecosystem as the R5 and R6.
On the used market the EOS RP is one of the most affordable routes to Canon full frame and the RF mount ecosystem. The LP-E17 battery is the primary management requirement — budget for two to three per shoot. Condition checks: EVF and LCD display quality, Dual Pixel AF eye-detect tracking in both still and video modes, and the card slot contacts. The EOS R8 (2023) provides a meaningful upgrade at a modest premium. The RP accepts Canon's EF-RF adapter for access to the full EF lens catalogue.
