Canon's cheapest full-frame mirrorless, a gateway to the RF system at a budget price.
The Canon EOS RP launched in 2019 as the most affordable full-frame mirrorless camera on the market. Using a 26.2MP sensor derived from the 6D Mark II, it was designed to tempt APS-C DSLR owners into full-frame RF mirrorless at a price close to mid-range APS-C bodies.
Key features include a 26.2MP full-frame sensor, Dual Pixel AF with eye detection, a vari-angle touchscreen, 4K video with a heavy crop, and a compact lightweight body. The 4779-point AF coverage is excellent. Burst rate is limited at 5fps. The body is small and light with a comfortable grip. Battery life is mediocre at around 250 shots.
The RP is praised for making full-frame mirrorless accessible and for excellent autofocus performance. It is criticised for the poor battery life, cropped 4K video, single SD card slot, and the 5fps burst rate which limits action shooting. The electronic shutter introduces significant rolling shutter distortion.
Very good value used as Canon's cheapest entry into RF full-frame. Check battery condition as these cameras drain batteries quickly. Budget for spare batteries. Test Dual Pixel AF with eye tracking. The R6 is a massive upgrade if budget allows but the RP remains capable for stills-focused photographers.
