Canon's classic FD fast normal prime — 50mm f/1.4 with excellent optics for FD-mount film cameras.
The Canon FD 50mm f/1.4 is a fast standard prime for Canon FD-mount film cameras, available in multiple versions from approximately 1971 through 1987. Seven elements in 6 groups. Eight aperture blades. 52mm filter thread. At approximately 230g. 0.45m MFD. Multiple versions: breechlock (S.S.C.), then new-FD bayonet.
Seven elements in 6 groups (S.S.C. coating on original versions). Eight aperture blades. The 52mm filter thread. At approximately 230g. Minimum focus distance of 0.45m. Manual focus only. f/1.4 maximum aperture. Full-frame coverage. Canon FD mount (breechlock or new-FD bayonet depending on version).
The Canon FD 50mm f/1.4 was produced in two principal design generations: the breechlock ('chrome nose') version and the later new-FD bayonet version. The breechlock attaches by threading a locking ring; the new-FD version uses a simpler bayonet twist. Both use the same 7/6 optical formula. The S.S.C. (Super Spectra Coating) multi-coating reduces flare in contrasty lighting.
On the used market the Canon FD 50mm f/1.4 is affordable as a vintage fast standard prime. Condition checks: focus helicoid smoothness, aperture blades for oil, 52mm front element for marks. Manual focus only. Breechlock or new-FD mount — not compatible with EF/RF without optical adapter.
