Canon's fast FD portrait prime — the 85mm f/1.2 S.S.C. Aspherical with an aspherical element.
The Canon FD 85mm f/1.2 S.S.C. Aspherical was introduced in 1976 as a very fast portrait-length prime for the FD manual-focus system, using a ground-and-polished aspherical element. It headed the FD 85mm line as a professional fast telephoto-portrait lens and predates the later New FD 85mm f/1.2L.
This is a manual-focus Canon FD lens with a fixed 85mm focal length and a very bright maximum aperture of f/1.2. It carries Canon's Super Spectra Coating and an aspherical element to control aberrations at full aperture. Focus and aperture are set manually on the FD barrel.
An 85mm f/1.2 is a classic portrait tool, its short-telephoto perspective flattering facial features while the extremely fast aperture renders backgrounds as a soft wash. Wide open it isolates the subject dramatically and works in very low light, gaining bite as it is stopped down, which suits portraiture and available-light work.
On the used market this aspherical fast 85 is a premium and comparatively scarce FD lens whose value depends heavily on condition. Inspect the large aspherical elements for haze, fungus, scratches and separation, confirm the aperture blades are clean and dry, and test the heavy focus helicoid for smoothness. It adapts to mirrorless via an optics-free FD adapter.
