Canon's rare fast FD supertele — the New FD 200mm f/1.8L, an f/1.8 professional telephoto.
The Canon New FD 200mm f/1.8L was introduced in 1989 as an extremely fast L-series telephoto for the FD manual-focus system, one of the last and most specialised lenses of the FD era. It was a professional sports and low-light telephoto and remains among the rarest and most prized lenses in the entire FD catalogue.
This is a manual-focus Canon FD lens with a fixed 200mm focal length and an exceptionally bright maximum aperture of f/1.8. As an L lens it used low-dispersion optics to control chromatic aberration at this speed. It is a large, heavy internal-focus telephoto in the New FD styling, with focus and aperture set manually.
A 200mm at f/1.8 delivers strong subject isolation and the ability to shoot fast action in poor light, throwing distant backgrounds into a complete blur. It was built for indoor and evening sport, stage and wildlife work where a very fast long lens allowed high shutter speeds, and its reach and speed together are unusual even today.
On the used market the New FD 200mm f/1.8L is a rare and very expensive collector and user lens, so provenance and condition are critical. Verify the large low-dispersion elements are free of haze, fungus, scratches and separation, confirm the aperture and focus operate smoothly, and check the built-in hood, tripod collar and drop-in filter. It can be adapted to mirrorless with an optics-free FD adapter.
