Canon's pocket superzoom compact with 40x optical zoom — 24-960mm equivalent in a tiny body.
The Canon PowerShot SX720 HS launched in 2016 as one of Canon's most compact superzoom cameras, packing a 40x optical zoom (24-960mm equivalent) into a genuinely pocket-sized body. It targets travellers who want extreme reach without the bulk of a bridge camera.
Uses a 20.3MP 1/2.3-inch BSI CMOS sensor with DIGIC 6 processor. Image quality is acceptable in good light but limited by the small sensor in low-light conditions. Intelligent IS stabilisation adapts to shooting conditions. WiFi and NFC for easy sharing.
No viewfinder — rear 3-inch fixed LCD only. 1080p 60fps Full HD video. 270g — incredibly light. Optical zoom mechanism extends considerably at full telephoto. USB charging. Built-in flash. Auto and manual exposure modes.
Available used very cheaply. The 40x zoom in a pocket body is the main selling point. No RAW shooting. The TZ70/TZ100 from Panasonic offer EVFs. Image quality is typical of small-sensor compacts — acceptable for web/social sharing but not for prints.
