Canon's flagship RF super-telephoto zoom with L-series optics and 500mm reach.
The Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM launched in 2020 as Canon's do-everything professional super-telephoto zoom. Covering 100-500mm with L-series optics and IS, it became the first choice for wildlife and bird photographers transitioning to Canon RF mirrorless. The 500mm reach in a zoom was previously only available in much larger lenses.
Optical quality is very good with sharp results across the range. IS provides approximately 5.5 stops standalone, enhanced by body IBIS. The lens accepts Canon's RF 1.4x and 2x extenders for 700mm and 1000mm reach. Nano USM autofocus is fast and accurate for birds in flight.
Canon RF mount only, 77mm filter thread. The EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM adapted via the EF-RF adapter is an alternative with a faster maximum aperture but less reach. The RF 200-800mm f/6.3-9 IS USM offers more reach at a slower aperture.
Holds value well on the used market. Check IS operation at all focal lengths, AF speed and accuracy at 500mm, and weather seal integrity. Test with the 1.4x extender if possible. The f/7.1 at 500mm demands strong light for reliable AF — test in various conditions.
