The Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM was released in 2021 as Canon's first native RF macro prime and the first Canon macro lens to exceed 1:1 magnification, achieving 1.4x (1.4:1) life-size reproduction at its 0.26m minimum focus distance. A dedicated SA (Spherical Aberration) control ring — unique in the Canon RF lineup — provides in-lens adjustment of bokeh character, shifting out-of-focus rendering between soft, smooth gradation and more defined backgrounds without post-processing. L-series dust and moisture sealing is built in throughout.

The optical design uses 17 elements in 13 groups. Nine aperture blades produce smooth out-of-focus rendering across the macro-to-infinity focus range. The 67mm filter thread is shared with several RF telephoto lenses for filter carry-over. At approximately 726g the lens accounts for macro optics, IS mechanism, and the SA control ring assembly. Minimum focus distance of 0.26m achieves 1.4x reproduction — beyond life-size on the sensor. IS is built in; at 1.4x magnification camera vibration amplifies shake substantially, making IS practically significant for handheld macro work. The SA control ring adjusts spherical aberration correction for creative bokeh control. L-series sealing is built in.

The SA control ring provides genuinely in-lens creative control over out-of-focus rendering — adjusting spherical aberration shifts bokeh from soft-edged (positive SA) through neutral to defined (negative SA), a capability that post-processing cannot replicate. The 100mm focal length provides comfortable working distance between lens and subject at macro distances.
