Canon's budget ultra-wide zoom for RF mount — 15-30mm with IS in a lightweight package.
The Canon RF 15-30mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM launched in 2022 as Canon's most affordable ultra-wide zoom for the RF mirrorless system. It provides 15mm at the wide end — wider than most standard ultra-wides — with IS stabilisation in a compact, lightweight package.
Optically adequate — centre sharpness is good but edge performance suffers, especially at 15mm. The variable f/4.5-6.3 aperture is very slow. IS provides approximately 5.5 stops of stabilisation. STM motor is smooth and quiet for video. Correctable distortion.
Canon RF mount with 67mm filter thread. Weighs just 390g — remarkably light for a 15-30mm. No weather sealing. Plastic barrel and mount. Minimum focus distance 28cm. The 15mm wide end is a genuine differentiator over 16mm alternatives.
Available used at budget prices. The RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM is vastly superior but much more expensive. The slow aperture limits astrophotography use. Good for casual landscape and architecture where weight and cost matter most. Check for barrel distortion at 15mm.
