Canon's ultra-compact RF wide-angle pancake prime at a budget price.

The Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 STM was released in 2021 as the most affordable and compact wide-angle prime in the Canon RF lineup, providing a 16mm f/2.8 full-frame equivalent angle of view — approximately 108° diagonal — in a body weighing just 165g. The STM motor provides quiet continuous AF for video. At 43mm filter thread and 165g it is the lightest Canon RF prime, suited as an ultra-wide addition to a RF travel kit. On APS-C RF-S bodies it provides a 25.6mm equivalent.

The optical design uses 9 elements in 7 groups. Seven circular aperture blades produce smooth out-of-focus rendering. The 43mm filter thread is a small size requiring a dedicated filter set — not shared with other RF lenses. At 165g the lens is the lightest and most compact RF prime. Minimum focus distance of 0.13m enables extreme wide-angle close-focus perspective. STM motor provides quiet continuous AF for video shooting. No IS — stabilisation relies on body IBIS for handheld video. f/2.8 maximum aperture.

The 16mm angle of view on full-frame captures extremely wide architectural and environmental perspectives. At 0.13m minimum focus distance the combination of ultra-wide angle and close-focus capability enables dramatic perspective exaggeration — subjects close to the lens are rendered large against a very wide background. At 165g and 43mm filter thread it is the most practical RF lens for ultralight travel where an ultra-wide is wanted without weight penalty. On APS-C RF-S bodies the 25.6mm equivalent is a moderate wide-angle.

On the used market the RF 16mm f/2.8 STM is affordable as the entry RF prime wide angle. Condition checks: STM AF response, 43mm filter thread for any damage, and front element condition — the short minimum focus distance puts the front element close to surfaces. No IS or weather sealing. The Canon RF 15-30mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM provides a zoom option at a higher price and weight. Compatible with all Canon RF-mount full-frame and APS-C RF-S bodies.
