Canon's full-frame RF superzoom covering an enormous 24-240mm range with IS.
The Canon RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS USM was released in 2019 as Canon's all-in-one superzoom for the RF full-frame mirrorless system, covering a 10x zoom range from 24mm wide-angle to 240mm telephoto in a single lens. The Nano USM motor provides fast, quiet autofocus for both stills and continuous video tracking. IS is built in for handheld use at the telephoto end. As a full-frame superzoom it trades optical peak performance for the convenience of a single-lens kit that covers the full general-photography focal range.
The optical design uses 21 elements in 15 groups. Seven circular aperture blades produce smooth bokeh. The 72mm filter thread requires a large-format filter set. At 750g the lens is moderate for a full-frame 10x zoom. Minimum focus distance of 0.5m at the wide end. IS is built in for handheld telephoto use. Nano USM provides fast, quiet AF suited to continuous tracking in both stills and video. Variable aperture from f/4 at 24mm to f/6.3 at 240mm — the f/6.3 maximum at 240mm limits low-light telephoto performance.
The 24-240mm's practical case is a single lens that covers wide-angle to moderate super-telephoto on full-frame — removing the need for a second lens in travel and events where lens changes are impractical. The Nano USM enables smooth continuous AF tracking for video, extending the superzoom's usefulness beyond stills. The trade-off versus a two-lens RF kit (24-70mm + 70-200mm) is peak optical quality: the superzoom design makes corrections across 10x range that no fixed-range zoom needs to make.
On the used market the RF 24-240mm IS USM is available at moderate prices as an all-in-one RF travel lens. Condition checks: IS operation, Nano USM AF response across the zoom range, zoom ring smoothness, and front 72mm element for marks. The Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM provides better optical quality across a shorter range at a higher price. Compatible with all Canon RF-mount bodies; on APS-C RF-S bodies (R50, R7, R100) the effective range is 38-384mm.
