Canon's compact RF-mount kit zoom with a narrow range but tiny footprint.
The Canon RF 24-50mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM was launched in 2023 as Canon's most compact RF full-frame zoom. Covering a modest 24-50mm range, it prioritises portability over versatility. It was designed as the kit lens for the EOS R8, making the system pocketable when the lens is retracted.
Optical quality is adequate with decent centre sharpness. The slow variable aperture is the main limitation — f/6.3 at 50mm leaves little light for indoor or low-light shooting. IS provides approximately 4.5 stops. The STM motor is quiet for video. The retractable design makes it extremely compact when not in use.
Canon RF mount for full-frame bodies, 58mm filter thread. The 24-50mm range is narrower than the typical 24-70mm or 24-105mm. The RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM offers much more range at the cost of size. The RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM is the serious upgrade.
Cheap used. Check the retractable mechanism and IS operation. The narrow zoom range and slow aperture mean this is purely a compact travel lens. Most users will want to upgrade to the RF 24-105mm for more versatility. Adequate as a starter but limited.
